LeBron James becomes first NBA player to reach 40,000 points

LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 career points.

LeBron James scored a layup in the LA Lakers’ home game against the Denver Nuggets to become the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career points.

Moreover a year ago, on February 7, 2022, at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder, James overtook former Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader. In 20 seasons, Abdul-Jabbar scored 38,387 points.

With 1,474 games played over 21 NBA seasons and an average of 27.1 points per game, James came into Saturday’s contest well-prepared.

The native of Akron, Ohio scored five points on 2-of-3 shooting in the first quarter, falling short of his most recent milestone of nine points.

With 10:39 remaining in the second quarter, James converted a left-footed layup to take the lead. And surpassed the 40,000 milestone after beating Michael Porter Jr. of the Nuggets with a spin move.

The historic endeavor was deemed “bittersweet” by him because it was a lost cause. Despite James’ 26 points in the end, the Lakers fell short against the Nuggets 124-114.

“Being the first player to do something, it’s cool in this league because you know the history. You know the grace that’s come through the league,” James said after the game.

However, victory is always the most important factor. And it bothered me that it had to occur in a defeat, particularly against a really proficient team.

“We played good basketball but we couldn’t close out the game it was bittersweet. But I enjoyed every moment while I was on the court.”

Congrats to @KingJames of the @Lakers for becoming the first player ever to score 40,000 career points!
